YouTube today introduced a new feature that allows publishers to invite others to annotate their videos. Just a few weeks ago, YouTube introduced a new annotation feature that made it simpler for publishers to add speech bubbles or spotlights to their videos. Now, you can send a special link to your friends so that they can easily add their own witty comments to your videos.

YouTube’s annotations editor now prominently features a link that you can share with your friends – or the whole Internet, if you choose to make it public. Commenters have to be logged in to YouTube to add annotations. The video’s owner can moderate these comments, though it does look like all new annotations are automatically added to the video immediately; there doesn’t seem to be a moderation queue.

Some video producers have found innovative ways of using YouTube’s annotations feature, but often, they are only a distraction, and a lot of videos are simply better without them. Fascinatingly, YouTube acknowledged this in its announcement today and YouTube makes it pretty simple to turn annotations off altogether. Just go to your ‘Account Settings‘ and look for the Annotations settings (obviously, you have to be logged in to YouTube for this to work).

Two days into the new Presidential administration, Barack Obama issued a memo calling on the still unfilled new office of Chief Technology Officer to make a list of recommendations for an Open Government Directive. The recommendations are due within 120 days of that memo, which called for “a system of transparency, public participation, and collaboration.” What would you like to see on the list of recommendations?

This morning the highly effective nonpartisan Sunlight Foundation launched a new microsite called Our Open Government List, where anyone can make suggestions for government transparency and all of us can vote on our favorite thoughts. It’s like Digg for steps to open up public data.

Anyone can submit thoughts or vote on those already submitted; no account creation is required. Click on the titles and you can post and read comments on the thought.

What’s in the lead so far? The number one vote getter this morning has been to make a “Digital deposit of government information to libraries.” APIs and bulk data access, and metadata standards are also getting a lot of votes. Voting has just begun, though, so now is a fantastic time to jump over to the site and have your voice be heard.

The Sunlight Foundation is a very respected organization and we’re sure that the results of the voting will be seen by the Obama administration. The group is co-producing a sold-out Barcamp called TransparencyCamp in D.C. this weekend, and we hope they’ll see some key Obama staffers there. So head on over to Our Open Government List and place in your two cents!

Daniel Simon, the guy designing the lightcycles and other crazy vehicles for Tron 2, previously published Cosmic Motors, a compendium of otherworldly vessels you will never drive, but spend your life wishing you could.

You can hit the guy’s blog for new concepts, or buy his 2007 book—$19.77 isn’t a lot for all those vehicles plus the impossibly hot women Daniel likes to draw as pilots and pit crew. The vibe, as you can see in the gallery, is somewhere between Star Wars and Firefly, with a touch of Talladega Nights thrown in for excellent measure.
