Apple announced that 13-year-old Connor Mulcahey of Weston, Connecticut won its billion App countdown contest, receiving a MacBook Pro, $10,000 iTunes gift card, an iPod Touch, and a Time Capsule. The App he downloaded to win was Bump, by Bump Technologies, which allows users to bump their iPhones together in order to exchange contact information.

Research group Piper Jaffray counted sales of Apple iPhones, Macs and iPods in various retail locations and offers some interesting numbers, along with predictions for Apple sales going forward. In flagship stores, Apple sells about 90 iPhones each day, compared with the 16 sold each day in its retail stores.
- Apple sells an average of 90 iPhone 3G handsets, 123 Macs and 240 iPods per day in its New York Fifth Avenue location and other flagship stores though in an average retail store, those numbers drop to 16 iPhones, 20 Macs and 27 iPods.

Apple is close to hitting 1 billion downloads from its App Store and plans on a prize giveaway for whoever downloads the billionth application that includes a MacBook Pro and an iPod Touch. In the free apps category, Facebook and Google Earth have been the most popular downloads. In the paid apps category, Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D tops that particular chart.

ABI Research finds that nearly half of the 40- to 59-year-olds it surveyed expected to find a touch-screen on a $50 phone, which may not be so outlandish after all. What hardly any respondents cared about were in-phone stereo loudspeakers and turn-by-turn directions.

Promising faster Internet speeds than existing 3G networks, Clearwire rolls out a 4G WiMax portable router that can wirelessly connect to up eight devices, including the Apple iPhone, some BlackBerry devices, some Windows Mobile phones, the Android-powered G1 and the upcoming Palm Pre. During Dell’s recent Efficient Enterprise announcement, executives said while Dell used to be viewed as a hardware provider, it is now much more. Dell is also making forays into the smartphone market, and one analyst predicted that Dell is likely to make an acquisition soon, while another suggested Palm could be a good catch. However, a third analyst said Dell may have lost its moment for an acquisition due to the potential success of the upcoming Palm Pre.
